About Moses Family Jerky

Some jerky brands begin with a business plan; this one began with a family recipe and a folding table. Moses Family Jerky was started in 2013 with the goal of bringing a disruptively fresh, bite-sized sliced beef jerky to shoppers. The recipe, the brand says, was passed down through the Moses family of York County, Pennsylvania. Its first stores were farmers market stands around York County, where the family sold its homemade-style smoked jerky and smoked sticks. From there the brand grew into grocery stores and gas stations from Philadelphia, PA to Baltimore, MD. It has since added coffee, candy and dog treat lines, under the tagline “Take Homemade Anywhere.”

What makes Moses Family Jerky different

The brand describes its process as USDA-approved meat marinated for multiple days, then smoked slow, producing what it calls a one-of-a-kind product from the Snack Food Capital of the World. Each 2.5-ounce bag carries 25 grams of protein, according to the manufacturer. Moses Family Jerky says it avoids using sodium nitrite, buys its meat from Wayne Nell & Sons of East Berlin, PA, and uses as many local suppliers as possible. Because homemade-style recipes carry few preservatives, the company says, it clears bags at the best-by date and packs an oxygen absorber in each.

Moses Family Jerky flavors we carry

If you want the house standard, start with the Original, strips of beef with a nice hickory flavor and the brand’s best-seller, found among our original beef jerky from independent makers. The Teriyaki brings soy, garlic and a little onion to the marinade, and joins our teriyaki beef jerky collection. Chesapeake Seasoning is the one the family calls unusual, a flavor it likens to Old Bay crab seasoning. For heat, the Spicy is infused with Old Grumpy Mark’s Hot Sauce of York, PA and billed as a massive cayenne blast; compare it with our other spicy beef jerky picks. The ghost pepper and sriracha styles carry no heat description on the manufacturer’s site; weigh them against our ghost pepper beef jerky. The savory side runs steakhouse, garlic and pepper, alongside our barbecue beef jerky lineup. Everything currently in stock is in the grid above.

Who it's for

If you like a homemade, hickory-leaning flavor rather than a candy-sweet glaze, start with the Original; if you chase heat, the Spicy is built on a hot sauce the brand calls a cayenne blast. The manufacturer emphasizes freshness and bite-sized slices over chew, and recommends refrigerating or freezing bags. Every flavor except Teriyaki is gluten-free, according to the manufacturer. Teriyaki is made with soy sauce, so check the Contains line on each bag if soy or gluten is a concern, since ingredient lists vary by flavor.
