About Renner Corner Jerky
This brand started with a small-town corner store and four decades of word of mouth. Renner Corner began in the early 1930s across the road from where it stands today in Renner, South Dakota. Bill Corbett built a new Renner Corner in the 1940s and sold it to Mort Sorum and Harold Zebell in 1950. In 1959 Mort Sorum bought out his partner's share and ran the place until his son Dean and Dean's wife Sandy bought it in May 1967. Over the years the corner was a gas station, grocery store, ice cream shop and locker plant, and for 25 years a post office. The fresh-meat side kept growing, from homemade sausage and home-cured bacon to the jerky the family calls Deans Beef Jerky. For 40 years that jerky stayed a southeast South Dakota secret, known to Renner locals and road-trippers passing through. After years of encouragement, the family put it online, and Renner Corner Jerky, a subsidiary of Renner Corner Meats, now ships it across the country.
What makes Renner Corner Jerky different
The brand's pitch fits on a bumper sticker: sliced, not pressed. Renner Corner Jerky describes its jerky as never processed, ground or formed, just 100% quality beef that the brand calls All-American, seasoned with family recipes. The company says it works in small batches with a tremendous attention to detail, and that its focus on quality starts with the cattle and does not end until the bag is in your hands. Everything is seasoned, cured in the smokehouse and packaged on site in the brand's own USDA-inspected facility in Renner, South Dakota. That facility sits at the same corner the family has run since 1967, which is part of why the brand leans on the phrase generations of experience. Each bag carries a Best By date printed 12 months from packaging.
Renner Corner Jerky flavors we carry
The range is all beef and all from Renner, and it runs from plain-spoken to sweet-and-hot. If you want the recipe that built the name, start with the original-style beef jerky, seasoned with salt, onion and garlic and billed as the flavor that started it all; no heat is called out. The Teriyaki is hickory-smoked and marinated in soy sauce, garlic, citrus and spices, which the brand describes as a balance of salt, pepper and sweet, so look for it among our teriyaki beef jerky picks. The Peppered is also hickory-smoked and seasoned with cracked black pepper for what the brand calls just the right amount of heat; it belongs with the rest of our cracked-pepper beef jerky. The Maple Jalapeño pairs maple with a jalapeño kick the brand describes as smooth and fiery, so it fits alongside our sweet and spicy beef jerky collection. Everything currently in stock is in the grid above.
Who it's for
If you want heat, the Peppered and the Maple Jalapeño are where the brand puts it; no heat is called out on the Original or the Teriyaki. On texture, expect sliced strips rather than pressed or formed pieces, since that is the whole point of the brand. According to the manufacturer, every flavor except Teriyaki is gluten free, and the Teriyaki ingredient list includes wheat and soy from its soy sauce and hydrolyzed soy protein. The other ingredient lists name beef, salt, spices, onion, garlic and flavoring with no separate Contains line, so check the bag if you have a specific sensitivity.
